In 1888, Right Reverend Anthony Durier invited the Sisters of Divine Providence of San Antonio, Texas, to move to Natchitoches and establish a school. In response, Mother General M. Florence sent six Sisters, who arrived in Natchitoches on August 29, 1888, and opened St. Mary's Academy on September 3, 1888, with seventy-five students. The Academy was housed in the former Placide Bossier Mansion on the highest hill in downtown Natchitoches along Touline and Third Streets. This same building had previously been used by the Sacred Heart Sisters in 1847, St. Joseph's College in 1857, the Priest School in 1866 and the Sisters of Mercy from 1871-1879.

Bishop Durier soon built a new convent that was completed in 1896. This wooden, two story house with galleries wrapped on two sides, housed the girls' school and auditorium on the second floor. The Sisters and boarders apartments as well as the chapel occupied the first floor while the male students continued to use the St. Joseph's College building. In 1907, a handsome brick veneer building was erected.

In approximately 1921, fifteen columns along with a grotto pathway and steps, were constructed on the hill on Touline Street. The columns include the names of several families - Watson, DeBlieux, McClung, Hill, Cloutier, Rusca - who were some of the Academy's early benefactors. More than a century later, their descendants, along with hundreds of additional families, continue to support St. Mary's. Although a new St. Mary's School was opened in December 1966 on East Fifth Street, through the courtesy of the First Baptist Church members, the columns at the original school location have remained as a symbol of the long-standing tradition of Catholic education in Natchitoches.

On Saturday, April 16, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. until noon, volunteers from St. Mary's Catholic School, the First Baptist Church and NSU will clean these fifteen remaining columns. Cleaning supplies and lunch will be provided at the event. For additional information, please contact Payne Williams at 352-6695 or willwill@cp-tel.net.

The history of St. Mary's Catholic School was excerpted from Sadie Maggio Dark's 2002 book, "The Catholic School in Natchitoches, Louisiana Including The Establishment of the Public Schools in Natchitoches Parish."
